Information on Visa for Temporary Visit to Japan (valid after October 11, 2022)

※ Multiple Entry Visa for temporary stay which have been issued before the introduction of the COVID-19 related entry restrictions in 2020 and which have been suspended due to those restrictions, will become valid again on 11.10.2022 for entry to Japan. Provided, that the entry to Japan is before the visa's expiration date/ that the expiration date has not yet been reached.

The category of “temporary visit to Japan” includes sightseeing, business trip, attending a conference, study trip, visit to a member of your family or friends and similar. The period of stay is 15, 30 or 90 days.

 

Processing conditions and fees

Please submit the application at the consulate or embassy responsible for your place of residence.

The following procedure applies to the Embassy in Berlin:
- Note! Applications can be submitted at the earliest a maximum of 3 months before departure.
- The processing time is minimum 5 working days (provided that all documents are complete and correct), sometimes longer. Please submit your application in time.
- Applications can be submitted either in person or by proxy without an appointment during opening hours.
- It is also possible to submit applications by post (Adress: Botschaft von Japan, Konsularabteilung, Hiroshimastr. 6, 10785 Berlin). In this case, only the copy of the passport is sufficient for the required documents (see below). The original passport must then be presented at the latest when collecting the visa.
It is not possible to submit an application by email! Please also do not send us documents by email without prior agreement so that they can be checked in advance. Such applications and requests will not be processed.

Visa issuance is free of charge for German and most EU citizens. For other nationalities a fee of 23,- Euro may apply. The fee is due upon collection of the visa and only in cash.

  • For non-EU citizens: Valid residence permit for Germany 
  • One completed and signed visa application form with photo (frontal, no scan, no copy, taken within the last six months, not damaged) *Citizens of CIS States, Georgia and Ukraine please submit 2 application forms and 2 photos.
  • Flight reservation
  • Itinerary/ Schedule of Stay (Please fill in as many details as possible about your planned activities and/or places you would like to visit. Filling only names of cities or e.g. "sightseeing" , "business" is not sufficient.)

In case a family member is sponsoring the costs on applicant´s behalf:

- Letter from the applicant’s company/institution to cover the travel expenses

If the trip is self-funded:
For example: 
Recent bank account statement or certificate of employment/enrollment

Proof of relationship
- For visiting a family member: birth certificate, marriage certificate, koseki tohon
- For visiting a friend: short explanation letter about relation + examples of emails, letters, photos (please prepare one document including all)

(A stock exchange-listed company can submit its quarterly corporate report („Kaisha shikiho“) instead of the certified copy of the incorporation register.)

(When the inviter is an individual, please submit the employment certificate)

Proof of financial resources

- Certificate of income or taxation issued by municipal office (“Shotoku shomeisho” or “Kazei shomeisho”)
- Recent bank statement of the Japanese bank
- Certificate of tax payment (Form 2) (“Nozei shomeisho”)

- Certificate of residence in Japan („Juminhyo“)

(When the guarantor is a non-Japanese, please submit a copy of both sides of valid resident card and a copy of passport.)
