In folgenden Fällen müssen Visa mit Certificate of Eligibility beantragt werden:
- Aufenthalte in Japan, die länger als 90 Tage dauern
- bezahlte Aktivitäten*, auch wenn sie kürzer als 90 Tage sind
*bezahlte Aktivitäten: Aktivitäten, für die Antragstellende von japanischer Seite Geld erhalten für die in Japan ausgeübte Tätigkeit. Aufwandsentschädigungen werden ggfs. nicht als Bezahlung betrachtet, die Entscheidung darüber obliegt allerdings allein der Japanischen Botschaft bzw. den Generalkonsulaten.

 

Bearbeitungszeit und Gebühr

Bitte stellen Sie den Antrag in dem für Ihren Wohnsitz zuständigen Konsulat oder Botschaft.
 
Für die Botschaft in Berlin gilt Folgendes:
- Die Bearbeitungszeit beträgt an sich mindestens 5 Werktage (sofern alle Unterlagen vollständig und korrekt sind), unter Umständen auch länger. Bitte stellen Sie Ihren Antrag rechtzeitig.
- Eine Antragsstellung ist maximal 3 Monate vor Reiseantritt möglich.
- Anträge können entweder persönlich oder durch Bevollmächtigte ohne Termin während der Öffnungszeiten eingereicht werden.
- Eine postalische Antragsstellung ist ebenfalls möglich (z.Hd. Konsularabteilung). Dabei reicht bei den benötigten Dokumenten (siehe unten) vom Pass und CoE jeweils nur die Kopie aus. Der Originalpass und CoE müssen dann spätestens bei der Abholung vorgelegt werden.
- Eine Antragsstellung per Email ist nicht möglich! Bitte senden Sie uns auch nicht ohne vorherige Absprache Unterlagen per Mail zu, damit diese vorab geprüft werden können. Solche Anträge und Anfragen werden nicht bearbeitet.

Die Visaausstellung ist für Deutsche und die meisten EU-Bürger kostenlos. Bei anderen Nationalitäten kann eine Gebühr von 23,-Euro anfallen. Dies wird bei Antragstellung mitgeteilt. Die Gebühr ist fällig bei Abholung des Visums und ausschließlich in bar!

Benötigte Dokumente

Bitte stellen Sie den Antrag in dem für Ihren Wohnsitz zuständigen Konsulat oder Botschaft.

Von Institution/ Bürge in Japan (z. Bsp. Arbeitgeber, Universität, Praktikumsfirma)

• Certificate of Eligibility (CoE): wenigstens in Kopie, im Original optional (*1)

Vom Antragstellenden:

• Reisepass (Original und Kopie)
• Nicht-Deutsche und Nicht-EU Bürger: gültige Aufenthaltsgenehmigung für Deutschland
• Visaantragsformular (*2)
• 1 Passfoto (*2)

*1 Hinweise zum CoE:
- NEU!!: Ab dem 17.03.2023 werden die Antragsbedingungen für Visa mit CoE erleichtert. Sowohl Visabeantragung als auch die Einreise nach Japan können auch nur mit der Kopie des CoEs gemacht werden. Gleichzeitig werden ab dem 17.3.2023 CoEs auch teilweise rein digital ausgestellt. Visabeantragung und Einreise nach Japan können mit einem Ausdruck der digitalen Version gemacht werden.
Antragstellende, die das CoE dennoch in original Papierform erhalten haben, sollten dieses nach Möglichkeit spätestens bei der Einreise nach Japan so vorlegen.

- Ab dem Ausstellungsdatum des CoEs muss innerhalb von 3 Monaten ein Visum beantragt und damit nach Japan eingereist werden! Ansonsten verliert das CoE seine Gültigkeit und kann nicht mehr verwendet werden.

*2: Staatsbürger aus den GUS-Staaten sowie Georgien und der Ukraine reichen bitte 2 Antragsformulare und 2 Passfotos ein.

 
Die Botschaft behält sich vor, zusätzliche Unterlagen zu verlangen.


 

Visa application with Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)

Visa applicaiton with Certificate of Eligibility is necessary in the following cases:
- stays in Japan longer than 90 days
- paid activities*, even if the stay is shorter than 90 days
*paid activities: Activities for which applicants receive money from the Japanese side for the activity carried out in Japan. Expense allowances may not be considered as payment, but the decision on this is the sole responsibility of the Japanese Embassy or Consulates General.
 

Processing time and fee

Please submit the application at the consulate or embassy responsible for your place of residence.

The following procedure applies to the Embassy in Berlin:
- The processing time is at least 5 working days (provided that all documents are complete and correct), sometimes longer. Please submit your application in time.
- Applications can be submitted a maximum of 3 months before departure.
- Applications can be submitted either in person or by proxy without an appointment during opening hours.
- It is also possible to submit applications by post (Attn. Konsularabteilung). In this case, only the copies of the passport and CoE are sufficient for the required documents (see below). The original passport and CoE must then be presented at the latest when collecting it.
- It is not possible to submit an application by email! Please also do not send us documents by email without prior agreement so that they can be checked in advance. Such applications and requests will not be processed.

Visa issuance is free of charge for Germans and most EU citizens. For other nationalities a fee of 23,- Euro may apply. You will be informed of this when you apply. The fee is due upon collection of the visa and only in cash.
 

Entry to Japan

Required documents

Please submit your application at the respective consulate or embassy responsible for your area of residence.

Institution/ Sponsor in Japan (e.g. employer, university etc.):

• Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) at least print out of copy, original form is optional (*1)

  Applicant:

• Passport (original and copy)
• Non-German and non-EU citizens: valid residence permit for Germany
• Visa application form  (*2)
• 1 passport photo  (*2)

*1 Notes regarding CoE:
- NEW!!: From 17.03.2023 the application conditions for visas with CoE will be relaxed. Both visa application and entry to Japan can also be made only with the copy of the CoE. At the same time, from 17.3.2023 CoEs will also be issued digital-only in some cases. Visa application and entry to Japan can be made with a printout of the digital version. Applicants who have nevertheless received the CoE in original paper form should, if possible, present it in this form at the latest when entering Japan.

- Starting from the date of issue of the CoE, a visa must be applied for and used to enter Japan within 3 months! Otherwise, the CoE loses its validity and can no longer be used.

*2: Citizens of CIS States, Georgia and Ukraine please submit 2 application forms and 2 passport photos.
